"My father was an eye surgeon, and as a child I made house calls with him as he removed his patients' bandages. They would be able to see for the first time in a long while, and their satisfaction and gratitude were instantly evident. This was one of my earliest impressions, and I grew up realizing that medicine was a field in which someone could help a lot of people.
"Later, as a medical intern, I pulled from a car a man who had died as his wife drove him to the hospital. When the 'code cart' arrived on the front steps of the hospital, I shocked him with the defibrillator and resuscitated him. When he left the hospital in good health a week later, I knew that electrophysiology would be the field for me.
"While electrophysiology is challenging and complex, it gives me great satisfaction to help people deal with life-and-death problems. I feel fortunate to have the skill and experience to offer every modern electrophysiology technique, including advanced techniques for atrial fibrillation treatment."
